The first day of the deer rifle season on the Monday after Thanksgiving is a 55-year tradition that could be coming to an end.

The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners is talking about possibly moving the start of the season to the Saturday after Thanksgiving, beginning in 2019.

After decades of declining license sales, a Saturday start could bring more participation, especially by young hunters.

"The thought is by moving that opening day to Saturday, that it would give the opportunity for many more to participate in the opening day," game commission spokesman Travis Lau said.

The change would extend the deer rifle season by one day, and hunters would have three Saturdays to take to Pennsylvania's fields and woods.

The board will discuss the proposed change at its next meeting in January. A final vote would come at a board meeting in April.

The backstrap is cut from the top of the deer located on each side of the spine. It’s equivalent to the loin section off a cow or pig. I’m not sure where the name back strap originated, but I’ve always heard it referred to as backstrap (so that’s what we call it).

As far as deer meat goes, it doesn’t get better than fresh backstrap. You can cut it into steaks just like beef fillet, slice it thin for pan frying, or (my personal favorite) leave it whole and smoke or grill.

A hunter in Arkansas made a strange discovery after bringing home what he thought 

was a 9-point buck.

ALTO, Mich. (WOOD) — A Kent County woman got a big surprise Tuesday when a deer she presumed dead attacked her.

Shawna Hoekstra and her children spotted the deer moving in a field near 60th Street and Morse Lake Avenue SE in Alto about 9:30 a.m.

“We got out our binoculars and telescope [and] took a look at it. It ended up being a deer with a good portion of its rump shot off,” said the wife and mother of three.

Hoekstra figured a hunter shot the buck and lost track of it.

She followed it. Her plan was to wait for the deer’s demise and dress it for the meat.

But Hoekstra didn’t wait long enough. As she closed in on the 150-pound buck, she realized it was still alive, hurt and scared.

“I thought it was done, but it wasn’t,” said Hoekstra.

The 10-point buck couldn’t walk — but it could lunge.

“Coming at me with that kind of rack, with that many points on it, I could be really injured. And that’s why I grabbed the rack, to get control of the head,” said Hoekstra. “And in grabbing the antlers, I just threw it to the ground and sat on it.”

At first, Hoekstra figured she could control the animal by sitting on it. She was wrong. The animal thrashed and eventually, Hoekstra became the one who was pinned.

“I didn’t get scared until it had my leg pinned. At that point, we’re calling 911. I knew I was in a bad way once I got my leg under it,” said Hoekstra.

Hoekstra said the buck’s atypical pointed rack also posed a threat to her face.

For a half hour, Hoekstra struggled with the buck. Her father eventually tracked her down and called 911.

An Alto firefighter managed to hold down the buck while a Kent County Sheriff’s deputy put down the animal.

Hoekstra said she learned a lesson from her close encounter.

“I got too close too soon, [that] is the mistake I made,” she said.  www.WOODTV.com

"Ghost of the White Deer" ... Sometimes being in the Mountains hunting animals brings more than just a kill or trophy to the wild experience, it sometimes brings the amazing.. I've been tracking this Female White Deer for over a week now and the opportunity came this morning for a perfect shot. But I was always told it's Bad Medicine to kill a white deer. After all the hard work outsmarting her, I didn't have the heart to kill her, so I left her live another day...Also In Native American mythology there is the Chickasaw legend, Ghost of the White Deer.  There is also a Lenape legend about white deer that predicts that when a pair of all-white deer is seen together, it is a sign that the indigenous peoples of the Dawnland will all come together and lead the world with their wisdom.
Many tribes and indigenous peoples throughout the world have similar myths. The Seneca, Roanoke, Algonquin, Nanticoke, and Pocomoke tribes all relate sightings of the Great White Deer.
