Attikamek Nation - Birch Bark Canoe Building - Directed by Bernard Gosselin - 1971
Caesar Newashish Building A Bark Canoe
Under our eyes, César Newashish, an Indian of the Attikamek Nation of the Manouane Reserve, Quebec, built his canoe. Early in the spring, or by mild weather in the winter, He penetrates into the wood, chooses his birch bark and, in a tower of hand, removes the bark that sews spruce roots. Of cedar wood, manufactures the ends of the boat, prepares greenhouses and ties, "membrane" and slat, poses of the gunwales and submits the canoe at exfoliating. These operations which can be followed on the screen show the address of the artisan and the concern for perfection that he brings to his work. A film without words.
