Rutting Bucks in Capitol Reef National Park
Rabbitbrush is blooming, the bucks are sparring—it must be fall. One of our park visitors caught this impressive scene in the Fruita Historic District. One mule deer buck still has velvet on his antlers, which bleed when the two tussle. "Velvet" supplies blood and oxygen to the antlers as they grow, but in the fall it becomes itchy because the bone antlers underneath are hardening and eventually the velvet will fall or be rubbed off. Stay at least 30 feet away from all wild animals. #FindYourPark #WildlifeWednesday ah
